Program Overview

The Loma Linda University Children's Hospital pediatric surgery fellowship was established in 2011. The program offers comprehensive training in the specialy including neonatal, oncologic, thoracic, and general surgery. One fellow is admitted to the program every two years and the next trainee will begin in July 2015. Applicants for this position will submit applications through the ERAS system https://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/eras/ by January 2014, and participate in the NRMP matching program http://www.nrmp.org/ with a match date of May 2014.

During the two-year period of the fellowship, the pediatric surgery service performs over 3000 operations and cares for almost 400 children with non-operative traumatic injuries.

Two-year case volumes:

  • Esophageal Atresia Repair: 18
  • Anorectoplasty for anorectal malformation: 31
  • Gastroschisis: 52
  • Diaphragmatic hernia: 23
  • ECMO: 30
  • Operation for biliary atresia/choledochal cyst: 12
  • Resection of Wilms tumor: 10
  • Pyloromyotomy: 182

The pediatric surgery fellow does one-month rotations with the NICU and PICU services during the first year of training. He or she also has operative experience with the urology, otorhinolaryngology, cardiac, and burn surgery services.

Application Requirements
Prerequisites/post-medical school requirements

Doctorate of Medicine
  • Completion of chief residency in an approved general surgery residency
  • Eligibility to take qualifying examination in General Surgery
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support Certification
  • Eligible for California medical license
