Outcomes for
Adult Inpatient Rehabilitation Services 2008

How we know a patient in rehabilitation is improving?

When a patient is in the hospital for rehabilitation, the hospital staff measures the patient's improvement and progress. This is because certain injuries to the body or disease affect a patient's ability to move or function and therapists work with patients to help them improve. The hospital staff need a way to measure improvement.

At LLUMC Rehabilitation, we use the FIM™ scoring system. A FIM™ score measures functional improvement. The FIM™ scoring system is used ni our programs such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and any with patient who we monitor for functional improvement.

The score is calculated based on 18 activities a patient is asked to do. Patients perform the 18 activities when they first come to the hospital anad do the same 18 activities when they discharge from the hospital to go home. The two scores show how much a patient has improved.

With the FIM™ score, the higher the number, the more independent a patient is and the more they have regained mobility or function after their injury.

At LLUMC Rehabilitation, we want all patients to leave our hospital with a high FIM™ score so that they can be sure the time they spent in rehabilitation was successful.

The score helps the doctors, therapists, and nurses ensure that all our patients are receiving the best care possible.

How does LLUMC Rehabilitation compare to other rehabiliation hospitals?

It is important to that LLUMC Rehabilitation compares our patient outcomes, or patient scores, to other rehabilitation facilities. We do this to ensure the care we provide is within national guidelines for providing excellent healthcare.

The statistics below provide information on how our facility compares to other rehabilitation facilities in 2008.
