New Books Published

Dr. Talat Kiris, Professor and Chairman of Neurosurgery from University of Istanbul Turkey and Dr. John H. Zhang, Professor and Director of Neurosurgery Research Program from Loma Linda University in California published a book on Cerebral Vasospasm: New Strategies in Research and Treatment.

Dr. John H. Zhang is the editor for a new book entitled Hyperbaric Oxygen on Neurological Diseases recently published by the Best Publishing.

Dr. John Zhang is the editor for a Review Book on Advancements in Neurological Research published recently by Research Signpost.

Welcome Dr. Yilin Zhou

Dr. Yilin Zhou joined Zhang Laboratory from Heidelberg, Germany in March 2008. Yilin received MD and PhD from the University of Heidelberg and has clinical experience in stroke unit in the Department of Neurology at the University of Heidelberg. We wish Dr. Zhou to have a productive time at Loma Linda University.

Welcome Dr. Jan Eckermann

Dr. Eckermann is a neurosurgery resident from the Department of Neurosurgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center who joined Zhang Laboratory in April 2008 to conduct surgical brain injury research. Jan, welcome on board.

Welcome Mr. Mehdi Saidi and David Spagnoli

Mr. Mehdi Saidi and Mr. David Spagnoli, two bioengineering master students from the Nancy University in France, have joined the neuroscience consortium in Loma Linda University in April 2008.

Welcome Dr. Yu Hasegawa

Dr. Yu Hasegawa, a neurosurgeon from Kyushu Japan has joined Zhang Laboratory in April 2008. Dr. Hasegawa has published many papers in high impact journals and is an experienced research. We are looking forward to the contribution from Yu in the coming years.

Welcome Back Dr. Matchett

Dr. Gerald Matchett, a resident of Anesthesiology in Loma Linda University has re-joined the Zhang lab in May 2008. Jerry has done one year research in the Zhang lab two years ago and published a few papers. We look forward to have a fun working time with Jerry again.

Farewell to Dr. Sugawara

Dr. Takashi Sugawara has done two years research in the Zhang lab and he is going back to Tokyo Japan in April 2008. Dr. Sugawara has written four papers, two have been published. Takashi, enjoy clinical neurosurgery practice in Japan!

Farewell to Dr. Westra

Dr. David Westra has finished his research rotation and went back to clinical duties in the Department of Neurosurgery at Loma Linda University. Dr. Westra has completed a study in the surgical brain injury.

Dr. Zuccarello Lectured on Hemorrhage Clinical Trial

Dr. Mario Zuccarello, professor of Neurosurgery from University of Cincinnati did the Neurosurgery Grand Round on March 12 and the Neuroscience Consortium Research Conference on March 14, 2008 in Loma Linda University. Dr. Zuccarello discussed his recent clinical trials on intracerebral hemorrhage.

Dr. Sehba Lectured Loma Linda Neuroscientists

Fatima A. Sehba, PhD, Associate Professor of Neuroscience, Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York lectured on "Mechanisms of cerebral injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage" to the Loma Linda University Neuroscience Research Consortium on April 4, 2008. Dr. Sehba leads research of early brain injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

New Award

Dr. Ihsan Solaroglu received AACNS Young Neurosurgeon Award 2007 in Nagoya Japan in November 10-21, 2007. The work presented was: Ihsan Solaroglu, J.H. Zhang on Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor Inhibits Neuronal Apoptosis and Exerts Anti-Inflammatory Effects after Focal Cerebral Ischemia in Rats: Emphasis on Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 Pathway in the 12th Asia-Australasian Society of Neurological Surgeons / 13th World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies Interim Meeting.

Intracerebral Hemorrhage Conference Award

One of the graduate students in Zhang laboratory, Timothy Lekic, was awarded the prestige Julian T. Hoff Award for his presentation on the new animal model of intra cerebella hemorrhage in the 2nd International Conference on Intracerebral Hemorrhage in Shanghai from November 9-11, 2007. Congratulations to Tim.

The 3rd International Conference on Cerebral Homorrhage

Dr. Austin Colohan, Professor and Chairman of Neurosurgery and Dr. John Zhang, Professor and Director of Neurosurgery Research will host the 3rd International Conference on Cerebral Hemorrhage in the Palm Springs in November 11-13, 2009.

Dr. Perez-Pinzon Lectured Neuroscience Group

Miguel A. Perez-Pinzon, PhD, Director of the Cerebral Vascular Disease Research Center, Professor of Neurology/Neuroscience, Department of Neurology, University of Miami School of Medicine, did an excellent lecture on "Ischemic Preconditioning: Mechanisms of Neuroprotection" in the Loma Linda Neuroscience Research Consortium on January 11, 2008.

Dr. Alkayed Lectured to Neuroscientists in Loma Linda

Nabil J. Alkayed, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Physiology and Pharmacology, Director, Core Molecular Laboratories and Training, Department of Anesthesiology and Peri-Operative Medicine, Oregon Health and Science University, lectured on "Lipid signaling and soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) in Neuroprotection" on November 30, 2007, in the Loma Linda University Neuroscience Consortium Research Conference. Dr. Alkayed's presentation impressed neuroscience researchers.

Dr. Xia Lectured to Neuroscience Researchers in Loma Linda

Ying Xia, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics from Yale University School of Medicine, lectured in the Loma Linda University Neuroscience Consortium Research Conference on December 7, 2007, on "Insight of neuroprotection mechanisms." Unique signaling pathways presented attracted warm attention.

Distinguished Scientists to visit LLU Neuroscience Consortium

Dr. Raghu Vemuganti, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at University of Wisconsin will lecture on "Functional significance of microRNAs in ischemic brain damage" in the Loma Linda University Neuroscience Research Consortium on May 4, 2008.

Dr. Heng Zhao, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University will lecture on “Post-conditioning Brain Protection” in the Loma Linda University Neuroscience Research Consortium on August 22, 2008.

Dr. Jin-Moo Lee, Associate Professor of Neurology from Washington University in St. Louis will lecture on Neuroprotection Mechanisms to the Loma Linda University Neuroscience Research Consortium on September 5, 2008.

Dr. Douglas C. Wallace, Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Center for Molecular & Mitochondrial Medicine and Genetics from University of California Irvine will visit and lecture to the Loma Linda University Neuroscience Consortium on September 17, 2008. 

Dr. J. Marc Simard, Professor of Neurosurgery from University of Maryland School of Medicine will visit and lecture to the Loma Linda University Neuroscience Consortium on September 19, 2008. 

New Book on Animal Models in Production

Dr. Jun Chen, Professor of Neurology and Pharmacology from University of Pittsburg, Dr. Xiaoming Xu, Professor of Neurosurgery from University of Louisville, Dr. Joe Zao C. Xu, Professor of Anatomy from University of Indiana, and Dr. John Zhang, Professor of Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology, Physiology and Pharmacology from Loma Linda University, will author a book named Animal Models of Acute Neurological Injury.

Special Issue on Chinese Neurosurgery Research

Dr. John Zhang, Professor of Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology, Physiology, and Pharmacology will serve as a guest editor for the journal of Neurological Research to publish a special issue on Chinese Neurosurgery Research in 2008. There are eleven articles written by Chinese neurosurgeons on spinal and brain tumors surgery and molecular biology, aneurysms basic science research and surgical management, interventional radiology, endoscopy and gamma knife.

Special Issue on Molecular Neurosciences

Dr. John H. Zhang serves again as the editor for a special issue on Molecular Neurosciences for the journal of Neurological Research. More than 12 papers will be included from different countries including several papers from Loma Linda University. This special issue will be published in 2008.
