Dr. Colohan

Dr. Colohan is Professor, Chair, and Residency Program Director for the Department of Neurosurgery. He received his medical doctorate from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, and completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Virginia, followed by a cerebrovascular fellowship at the same institution.

Dr. Colohan is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and is Secretary-Treasurer for the Western Neurosurgical Society. His clinical areas of expertise are cerebrovascular head injury and general neurosurgery, including spine. He takes great pride in the residency training program, having been a teacher for six years before entering medicine. Dr. Colohan is extensively published and nationally acknowledged for his commitment to teaching and clinical excellence.

Dr. Johnson

Dr. Johnson received his medical doctorate from Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California, and completed his postdoctoral training at SUNY, Brooklyn, New York-Kings County Hospital Center. Dr. Johnson previously held positions at SUNY-Health Science Center in Brooklyn, and The Emory Clinic in Atlanta, Georgia. Before returning to Loma Linda University to accept his current position, he completed additional training in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery at UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Johnson is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a member of multiple medical societies. He specializes in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery.

F. P. K. Hsu

Dr. Frank P. K. Hsu is an Associate Professor in the department of neurosurgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center, and board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor of science degree. He then attended medical and graduate school at University of Maryland. He completed his neurosurgical residency at Oregon Health & Science University, as well as fellowship training in functional, stereotactic, and pain neurosurgery. He then finished a fellowship in cerebrovascular and skullbase neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Hsu has special research interests in the biomechanics of cerebral aneurysms, brain and spinal cavernous malformations, and the application of technology within neurosurgery. He has received funding for his research from the Veteran's Administration and American Heart Association.

Dr. Hsu is recognized for his special areas of expertise in cerebrovascular, skullbase, and functional neurosurgery. His particular interests include patients with aneurysms, vascular malformations, movement disorders, benign and malignant tumors, and general neurosurgical problems.



Farbod Asgarzadie, MD

Dr. Asgarzadie

Dr. Farbod Asgarzadie recently joined the Department of Neurosurgery as an Assistant Professor. He graduated from UC Berkeley summa cum laude and completed medical school at the University of Chicago. He remained in Chicago for his neurosurgical residency at Loyola University. After residency, he came to Southern California to complete a spine fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently board eligible for the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Asgarzadie's main clinical interests are minimally invasive spinal surgery, spinal motion preservation surgery, spinal tumors, Chiari malformation and syringomyelia, and general neurosurgery. 



Alexander Zouros, MD, FRCS(C), FAAP

A. Zouros

Dr. Alexander Zouros is a board certified pediatric neurosurgeon as well as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital. He earned his medical degree at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia and completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Dr. Zouros completed further fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery at the Children's Medical Center of Dallas affiliated with University of Texas at Southwestern.

Dr. Zouros is committed to the education of medical students and resident staff. He has taken on the role of Assistant Residency Program Director. Dr. Zouros has clinical interest and surgical expertise in the full breadth of pediatric neurosurgery, including the management of hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis and craniofacial deformities, brain and spine tumors, epilepsy, spina bifida, and pediatric spinal disorders.


John H. Zhang, MD, PhD

J. H. Zhang

Dr. Zhang is the Director of Neurosurgical Research, Professor of Neurosurgery, Professor of Anesthesiology, and Professor Physiology at Loma Linda University.

Dr. Zhang attended medical school at Chongqing University of Medical Sciences in Chongqing China. He completed a neurology residency and did two years postdoctoral research training in Beijing Neurosurgical Institute. He then completed a graduate student program under Drs. David Cook and Bryce Weir and obtained a PhD in the study of cerebrovascular diseases at the University of Alberta Medical Center in Edmonton Canada. He finished his postdoctoral training in physiology and pharmacology at the McMaster University under Dr. Ed Daniel in Hamilton Canada. He was an Assistant Professor of Surgery (research) at the University of Chicago and later a Research Scientist and Head of the Biochemical Pharmacology Department at the Deborah Research Institute in New Jersey. Dr. Zhang became an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and was the Director of Research in the Research Division from 1997-2001. Dr. Zhang was appointed as the Schumpert Endowed Medical Center Chair in Neurosciences, Vice-Chair and Director of Neuroscience Research, Professor of Neurosurgery, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Physiology, and Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the Louisiana State University Health Science Center at Shreveport before joining the faculty at Loma Linda University during the summer of 2004.

Dr. Zhang's research interests include cerebral vascular biology, cerebrovascular diseases, neonatal hypoxia, spinal cord injury, and brain tumor. He has special interest in stroke research especially cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Recent research interests include the use of hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of cerebral vascular disorders especially neonatal hypoxia and cerebral palsy. Dr. Zhang's research efforts are supported by grants from the American Heart Association, National Institute of Health, and Louisiana Board of Regents.



Wolff M. Kirsch, MD

W. M. KirschDr. Kirsch is Professor of Neurosurgery and Biochemistry, Director of the Neurosurgery Center For Research, Training, and Education, and former Division Chief and Program Director for the Neurosurgery Residency Program. He received his medical doctorate from Washington University and completed his postdoctoral training at Washington University as well.

Dr. Kirsch is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and by the National Board of Medical Examiners. He has served on many national boards and committees including the Cancer Research Review Committee for the NIH and as an associate examiner for the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He is well known as a co-inventor of the VCS Microclip and holds several patents for a variety of other appliances and methods. He is a renowned author and has published several books and more than 100 articles in journals such as the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Neurology, and many more. His grant history involves more than $4 million dollars in funding for various research projects.

Dr. DayesDr. Dayes is Professor of Neurosurgery. He received his medical doctorate from Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California and completed his postdoctoral training at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Dayes is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He is a member of multiple societies and fellowships such as Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the San Bernardino County Medical Society. He has multiple publications to his credit.
