Volunteer Programs



Once you have successfully passed the small group interview and completed the Volunteer Orientation. , we will place you in an appropriate position based on your qualifications and availability.  Evening positions are limited, with many requests for those time slots.  Most positions require an additional training, and some require an additional interview.  Program availability is subject to change without notice 

 

CANCER CENTER TEA CART

Interact with patients in our Cancer Center.  Provide refreshments and friendly conversation to patients undergoing treatment.

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          Monday -Thursday, 10:00 am and 2:00 pm; Friday 10:00 am

Qualifications: You must be a people person; friendly and outgoing.  Must be physically able to push tea cart.

 

 

CANCER VISITATION PROGRAM - ON HOLD

Provide visitation and resource information as appropriate to inpatients in the oncology units.  Must be at least 1 year past personal cancer experience.

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          Varies, approx 2+ hours per visitation

Qualifications: Additional interview required. Prior experience with cancer patients required. Volunteer must be able to deal with serious illness. 

 

 

CHILD LIFE PROGRAM 

*Please note: Child Life trainings typically fill up at least 1-2 months in advance.

  • ACUTE CARE PEDIATRICS / ONCOLOGY UNIT / HEART UNIT

Under the direction of a Child Life Specialist, assist in providing diversional activities and sensory stimulation for pediatric patients.  Activities at bedside and in activity room include reading, telling stories, playing games, and crafts. Volunteers may choose from the activity rooms listed above.

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          9:00 am - 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Monday-Thursday

                                     9:00 am - 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Friday 

                                     9:00 am - 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Saturday & Sunday

Qualifications: Child Life training required.  You must be able to deal with serious illness. 

 

  • NICU (NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE)

Provide snuggling to infants in the NICU, including holding, rocking and sensory stimulation.

Minimum age:               21

Hours:                          8 am – 8 pm, 7 days a week

Qualifications: Extensive training required.   Additional interview with Child Life staff required.

  

  • PATS/OBSERVATION

Under the direction of a Child Life Specialist, volunteers will provide diversional activities such as playing games, reading, arts & crafts, puzzles, etc to pre-surgery patients and siblings. Other duties may include assisting staff by distributing schedules, helping with light clerical work and cleaning toys. 

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          8:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday-Friday (closed holidays)

Qualifications: Child Life training required. Volunteer must be able to commit to a 2-hour shift (arrive no later than 1:30 pm).   

     

 

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

*Please note: Emergency Department trainings typically fill up 1-2 months in advance.

Provide customer service in waiting room area and assist Emergency Department staff by stocking shelves/supplies, cleaning gurneys and making beds. Direct patients and families to other areas, run errands to other departments in hospital and pick up supplies from Central Service.

Minimum age:               21

Hours:                          24 hours a day/7 days a week

Qualifications: ED Training required.  Volunteer must be independent, self-starter, assertive, and able to adjust to varied work patterns.

 

 

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AMBASSADOR

Work under the supervision of ED Concierge and the ED Charge Nurse, supporting and supplementing the activities of the ED Staff with non-medical assistance of patients and their families. Provide assistance with admission forms. Follow up with patients and families in the waiting area.

Minimum age:               21

Hours:                         24 hours a day/7 days a week

Qualifications: You must be friendly and outgoing. Fluency in Spanish is not mandatory but is a definite plus.

 

 

ESCORT

Welcome and provide assistance to patients and visitors in the main lobby of the Medical Center and Children’s Hospital. Help answer questions and escort patients/visitors.

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          8:00 am - 8:00 pm, 7 days a week

Qualifications: You must be friendly and outgoing. Fluency in Spanish is not mandatory but is a definite plus.

 

 

GIFT SHOP

Be an active member of our gift shop team.  Provide customer service.  Assist management in daily operation of stocking, merchandising, and creating new displays. 

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          9:00 am - 8:00 pm, Monday-Thursday

                                     9:00 am - 3:00 pm, Friday

                                    10:00 am - 6:00 pm, Sunday

                                    (Closed Saturdays and holidays)

Qualifications: You must be good with money, friendly and outgoing; able to stand for long periods of time.  You must be reliable and prompt.

 

 

GOLF CART

Welcome guests and provide Golf Cart service to and from visitor parking lots.

Minimum age:               18 *Must have valid driver’s license

Hours:                          8:00 am - 6:00 pm, Monday-Friday

Qualifications: You must be friendly and outgoing. Fluency in Spanish is not mandatory but is a definite plus.

 

 

LOMA LINDA CHILDREN’S CENTER

Assist teachers and staff with activities, naps, and story time. Help clean the kitchen. Assist with other duties as needed.

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          8:00 am – 1:00 pm, 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday       

Qualifications: You must be friendly and willing to help.

 

 

LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY HEART & SURGICAL HOSPITAL 

Interact with patients in our new medical facility, located at the corner of Barton Rd & New Jersey.  Volunteer opportunities include: Information Desk/Surgery Waiting Area and Patient/Visitor Escort.

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday

Qualifications:  Multiple trainings required during normal business hours. You must be a people person; friendly; independent. Must be comfortable with phones and using a computer. Volunteer must be able to commit to at least one 4-hour assignment per week.  Fluent in Spanish is not mandatory but is a definite plus.

 

 

MEDICAL SIMULATION - FULL

Provide support for medical simulation (mock-up situations), website design, and multi-media production. Other duties include office work, i.e., scanning, copying, and filing.

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          Variable (M-F)

Qualifications: Additional interview required. You must be comfortable with computers. Volunteer must be independent, self-starter, and able to adjust to varied work patterns.

 

 

MENDED HEARTS SUPPORT PROGRAM

Provide information and support to heart disease patients and their families, both before and after surgery. Assist at the Mended Hearts Desk. 

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          Variable, 7 days a week

Qualifications: Volunteer must have personal or family experience with heart disease and become a member of Mended Hearts, Inc.

 

 

MUSIC CONNECTION

Foster a positive, soothing atmosphere by providing musical performances in the lobby areas or patient units. Guitar, piano and violin music preferred.

Minimum Age:               18

Hours:                          Variable, 7 days a week

Qualifications: Audition required.  Volunteer must be self-directed and comfortable performing in front of people.

 

 

OPERATION CARE PACKAGE

Let patients know we care about them by delivering a gift to them post-surgery.

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          8:00 am – 8:00 pm, 7 days a week

Qualifications: Volunteer must possess good organizational and customer service skills; be outgoing and a people-person.

 

 

PATIENT UNIT PROGRAM - Unit 3100

*Please note: Trainings are scheduled on an as-needed basis depending on staff availability

Maternity – Ante-Partum

Under the general direction of the staff of the Maternity Unit 3100, volunteers visit patients in their rooms to offer services and diversional activities, such as teaching patients how to knit and crochet.  

Minimum Age:               18

Hours:                          10:00 am - 2:00 pm, 7 days a week

Qualifications: Unit 3100 training required.  Volunteer must be reliable and prompt.

 

 

PATIENT UNIT PROGRAM - Unit 3800

*Please note: Trainings are schedule on an as-needed basis depending on staff availability

Maternity – Post-Partum

Under the general direction of the staff of the Maternity Unit 3800, volunteers visit patients in their rooms to offer services, provide visitor access to the unit and assist with new unit gift corner.

Minimum Age:              18

Hours:                          8:00 am - 7:00 pm, 7 days a week

Qualifications: Unit 3800 training required.  Volunteer must be reliable and prompt.

 

 

PATIENT UNIT PROGRAM – 6th Floor - ON HOLD

General Medicine, Med/Cardio/Neuro Telemetry, Acute Medicine Units

Visit patients in their rooms and offer services such as reading, meal selection, playing games, conversation and other forms of diversional activities.  Assist nursing staff with various unit duties.  A great option for pre-nursing/pre-med students or anyone considering a career in healthcare!

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          8:00 am - 8:00 pm, 7 days a week

Qualifications: Extensive unit-specific training required. You must be a people-person, friendly and energetic.  Volunteer must be reliable and prompt.

 

 

PATIENT UNIT PROGRAM – Units 4700, 7100 - ON HOLD

Coronary Care ICU and Cardio Thoracic Surgery/Acute Care ICU Units

Visit patients in their rooms and offer services such as reading, meal selection, playing games, conversation and other forms of diversional activities.  Assist nursing staff with various unit duties.  A great option for pre-nursing/pre-med students or anyone considering a career in healthcare!

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          8:00 am - 8:00 pm, 7 days a week

Qualifications: Extensive unit-specific training required. You must be a people-person, friendly and energetic.  Volunteer must be reliable and prompt.

 

 

SURGERY WAITING AREA

Act as a liaison between the OR staff and families of patients undergoing surgery. 

Minimum age:               18

Hours:                          8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday

Qualifications:  Multiple trainings required during normal business hours. You must be a people person; friendly; independent.  Must be comfortable with multi-line phone and using a computer. Volunteer must do well under pressure and be able to commit to at least one 4-hour assignment a week.  Fluency in Spanish is not mandatory but is a definite plus.

Assist various hospital departments with office duties, including answering phones, computer entry, filing, errands and other clerical tasks.

Minimum age:               14-17

Hours:                          8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday-Thursday (June-August only)

                                     8:00 am – 1:00pm, Friday (June – August only)

Commitment:                 Four hours per day / three times per week

Qualifications:  Volunteer must be prompt and reliable.

*A limited number of teens may be able to continue volunteering in limited year-round positions pending successful completion of the Teen Summer program.

 

 

LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY EAST CAMPUS HOSPITAL: BAKING PROGRAM

When you’re under the weather, nothing feels better than comfort food. As a volunteer for our baking program, you will have the opportunity to bake cookies, muffins, and more. Once you’re finished in the kitchen, you can share your goodies fresh out of the oven. Patients, families and staff feel extra special when someone goes to the trouble of making something just for them. The baking program is a perfect way to show you care. Certified Food Handler’s Training is required and offered once you’ve selected the program.

LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY EAST CAMPUS HOSPITAL: REST AND RELAXATION CART

The stress of being in the hospital can be intense. There are times when getting lost in a good DVD is just what the doctor ordered. Perhaps the patients would like to write a letter to a friend or family member. You can take the activity cart directly to the  patient’s bedside to provide a positive distraction during their hospital stay. If you enjoy making new friends, volunteering with the activity cart is the perfect way to spend time with the East Campus patients.

LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY EAST CAMPUS HOSPITAL: HORTICULTURE PROGRAM

Do you enjoy an occasional dig in the dirt? If so, you may be the perfect volunteer to participate in our horticulture therapy program. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a green thumb to be part of this special volunteer assignment. Not only is gardening fun, it also has fantastic healing effects for patients. You will work with patients one-on-one to develop their own personal gardening project.  If you prefer gardening on a larger scale, you can help maintain our therapy garden in your free time by coming to water, weed or plant seasonal plants.

LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY EAST CAMPUS HOSPITAL: MUSIC CONNECTION

For many people, music is a key to healing the mind, body and soul. Music can take you to a million different places. We have needs for the restorative effects of music in several venues on our campus:

*Lobby entertainment

LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY EAST CAMPUS HOSPITAL: ORTHOTICS AND PROSTHETICS

Bring your technical savvy to the table by volunteering your time at the East Campus Orthotics and Prosthetics lab. You will have the opportunity to learn how orthotics and prosthetics are made to specifically fit the needs of patients. Your expertise in office programs like PowerPoint, Excel and Word will also be crucial in documenting the project. Volunteers in this department must go through an interview with the department director to be accepted and will be chosen on an as-needed basis.

LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY EAST CAMPUS HOSPITAL: RESOURCE CENTER 

Become an active member of our volunteer team by becoming an expert in the East Campus Resource Center. You will interact with patients, patient families, visitors and staff while helping to provide vital information to those who need it most. When unexpected injuries or illnesses arise, information can bring priceless comfort to patients and their families. You will be a fundamental team member of this important source. Fantastic customer service is a must!
