LLUMC Staff Development Courses: Balloon Pump

CE courses: adult classes

Intra - Aortic Balloon Pump Training

Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) therapy is used for more than 100,000 patients each year in the United States and has assumed a prominent role in treating patients with heart failure. Specialized knowledge and skills are necessary to manage these patients to reduce the risk of complications and minimize morbidity. The indications for IABP therapy, complications of therapy, and the nursing care required will be reviewed during this program. The program is divided into two courses: 1) an introductory basic training course for clinicians new to IABPs, with hands-on instruction using the AutoCat1 balloon pump model; 2) an advanced course for clinicians with previous IABP experience. The focus of the advanced course will be on IABP troubleshooting for the expert user.

Target audience

Registered nurses and other patient care providers who care for critically ill patients requiring intra-aortic balloon pump therapy.
