This four-day labor and birth nursing core class will focus on the nursing assessment and care of the pregnant woman and her newborn in the labor and birth hospital setting. The class will address issues of antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum nursing care and triage as well as nursing care of the fetus and newborn during and immediately following birth. Related topics also addressed include the following: pain control, breast-feeding, labor inductions, cesarean birth, obstetric emergencies, perinatal loss, and perinatal outreach. In addition, selected obstetric skills will be taught including fundal assessment, obstetric emergencies, deep tendon reflexes, vaginal examination, and fetal monitoring equipment.
Target Audience: New perinatal, obstetric, emergency department nurses, or other nurses looking for a refresher class or a different field of nursing.
