This three-day course will focus on the nursing assessment and care of the surgical patient during the intraoperative period. The course will address issues related to the scope of nursing practice in perioperative settings. Topics of discussion include: surgical patient assessment and care planning; safety precautions for surgical patients and personnel; caring for an anesthetized patient; specimen handling; medication safety; wound closure materials; and overviews of patient care needs during specialty surgery intervention including general surgery, urologic, gynecologic, cardiothoracic, vascular, neurologic, orthopedic, pediatric surgery, ENT surgery, plastic, and oral surgery. Related topics include a review of current standards of perioperative nursing; electrosurgery, radiologic, and laser safety; management of the surgical environment; and the perioperative care of patients with special needs
Target audience: Nurses and surgical technologists who practice in any perioperative setting such as hospital operating rooms, outpatient surgery centers, and physicians' offices.
