Reaching out to the community and world
Center for Health Promotion
LLUMC believes that the best medicine is not battling disease but rather preventing disease and illness. The Medical Center thus supports Loma Linda University's Center for Health Promotion which offers a number of health and preventive medicine programs to the public. These include programs and services in weight management, nutrition and cooking, health and risk evaluation, smoking cessation, stress management, addiction recovery, and an international travelers clinic. To take advantage of these and other programs, call (909) 558-4496.
Social Action Community Health System Clinics
For more than 35 years, Loma Linda students, faculty, staff, and volunteer health professionals have donated their time and energy to SAC Health System community clinics, which provide a safety net of primary, dental and behavioral health care to those in the Inland Empire who cannot afford health insurance. SAC Health System is currently the largest provider of low-cost primary health care in the region, serving individuals throughout the Inland Empire and beyond.
SACHS clinics are currently located within the City of San Bernardino providing a wide array of health services including primary health care, dental, mental health, physical and occupational therapy, neurologic rehabilitation, speech therapy, and nutrition counseling.

Students for International Mission Service
Over the past 20 years, more than 2,000 health-professions students at Loma Linda have traveled to locations around the world to operate temporary health care clinics where little other medical care is available. Known as SIMS (Students for International Mission Service), this program allows Loma Linda students unparalleled opportunities to use their health care skills in serving others. Most SIMS trips are taken during spring breaks, summer vacations, and weekends during the school year. SIMS destinations have included several sites in Africa, Mexico, and Brazil. With the tremendous increase in poverty in the United States during the 1980s, SIMS trips are also increasingly being taken to areas of need within this nation.
International Heart Surgery Team
Located in the fastest-growing region in California, Loma Linda University Medical Center personnel have never lacked for patients or clinical challenges. Yet feeling a commitment to human service which transcends the hospital's walls, they have on numerous occasions and in numerous ways reached out to people in need of medical care far away from Loma Linda.
Perhaps the most prominent example of Loma Linda's outreach programs is the Loma Linda University Overseas Heart Surgery Team. Established in 1963, the team initially traveled to Pakistan under the auspices of the US Department of State. They spent six weeks in Karachi and operated on 44 patients. In subsequent years, the team has traveled to numerous additional countries and established heart surgery programs in places including Greece, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, The People's Republic of China, Zimbabwe, and Nepal.
