For Students

Heart disease and other cardiac problems are important concerns for women, just as they are for men. Although heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women, the good news is that women's heart health can be easily improved through the right preventative care and effective treatment plans.

At the Loma Linda University Medical Center, our dedicated cardiovascular surgeons and specialists have experience:

  • Diagnosing a range of complicated heart health problems
  • Developing comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans to improve women's heart health and overall wellbeing
  • Performing cutting-edge heart surgeries and transplants
  • Providing preventative care
  • Researching new diagnostic methods and treatment options through our ongoing clinical trials

By properly maintaining heart health, women will benefit from happier, healthier and longer lives.

Our World-Class Diagnostic Process
Before the proper course of treatment can be identified, our well-trained staff will gather a woman's complete medical history, ask her about her symptoms and then perform a thorough physical exam on her. Following these preliminary steps, our physicians may perform a series of more involved diagnostic tests, including but not limited to:

  • Blood tests to check cholesterol levels and blood cell counts which can indicate the presence of heart disease
  • X-rays and echocardiograms to create an image of the heart so our specialists can examine the structure of the heart, lungs and surrounding blood vessels
  • Electrocardiograms (ECGs) to measure the electrical impulses produced by a beating heart (ECGs can identify arrhythmias, irregular heartbeats.)
  • Cardiac catheterization to measure the pressure in and blood flow through the heart's various chambers
  • Biopsies to detect if the heart is inflamed
  • CT scans and MRIs, including 3T MRIs, to identify clogged arteries and other problems with the heart's structure or function

Our Cutting-Edge Heart Treatments
While the exact treatments prescribed to a woman will depend on the type and severity of her unique condition, in most cases, treatments for heart problems include but are not limited to some combination of:

  • Lifestyle changes, including adopting a low-fat, low-sodium diet, exercising regularly, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption
  • Medications to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels or to reduce blood clots
  • Robotic and minimally invasive heart surgery
  • Traditional open heart surgery or heart transplants
  • Implantation of medical devices, such as pacemakers or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator
