Department of Anesthesiology - Residency Program - Application Information

Positions Available

We generally have 16 residents per year in our program; at present we have 49 residents. We will be offering 15-16 positions available for match in March of 2009. The department is in the process of transitioning to a four-year program, but how many (if any) will be available for this summer is still not determined at this time.  Please check back frequently or call us for further information.

Our department has an excellent track record of graduating superior residents, and we make every effort to keep up the traditional high standards of our program by looking for applicants who display the following attributes and/or qualifications:

  • Solid academic achievement as demonstrated by USMLE performance

  • Strong clinical performance as demonstrated by letters of recommendation and the medical school dean's letter

  • Adequate interpersonal/communication skills as demonstrated by the interview process

Applicants who have interesting and diverse backgrounds, including research experience, are encouraged to apply.

Application Requirements

Each applicant will be required to submit through ERAS the following materials:

  • Current copy of the curriculum vitae (CV)

  • Three current letters of reference

  • USMLE results

  • Personal statement (one page is sufficient)

  • Medical school transcripts

  • Medical school dean's letter

The Process

Our program participates in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). All applicants should apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The application cutoff date for the March 2009 match is Friday, November 7, 2008. Applications are evaluated by the program director and the associate program director, and those who are chosen for an interview will be contacted by the residency coordinator by e-mail to schedule the date for interview. The interviews will take place from November through January. Slots fill up rapidly so applicants are encouraged to complete their applications as soon as possible.

The day of the interview typically begins with a meeting with the program director or associate program director who will give a short presentation about the particulars of the program, including locations, hours, rotations, and so forth. A continental breakfast will be served. Applicants will interview with members of the selection committee, which is composed of the chair, vice-chair, program director, and associate program director. At times, other attending anesthesiologists may interview if any of the above are not available. All interviews are one-on-one and take about 10 to 15 minutes each. When the interviews are finished, applicants are shown around the premises by the chief residents and further opportunity is then given to interact with present residents, students, staff, and others.
