Common Chemotherapy Drug Combinations for Malignant Mesothelioma
You may get chemotherapy drugs alone or in combination. Your doctor may give you one or more of the following drugs.
Amethopterin, Mexate, or Folex (methotrexate)
Here are some combinations of drugs that may be used to treat this cancer.
Alimta (pemetrexed) and Platinol (cisplatin)
Platinol (cisplatin) and Gemzar (gemcitabine)
Platinol (cisplatin) and Adriamycin (doxorubicin)
If the tumor is small and in your chest or stomach, the drug of choice is often Platinol. It is given as local treatment, directly to the area of the tumor.
If you have advanced mesothelioma, most doctors recommend the combination of Alimta and Platinol, if you are able to tolerate it.
Sometimes your doctor may use chemotherapy with an immunotherapy drug called interferon in the chest or stomach. Other drugs called targeted therapies are also being studied for use against mesothelioma.
