The Center for Joint Replacement has recognized the need for continued research in the field of hip and knee implants. In general, people are living longer and more active lives, creating a demand for improved, longer lasting implants. Through the generous donation from Howard and Irene Peterson, the dream to create a world class tribology laboratory to study the wear of hip and knee prosthesis was realized. The Peterson Tribology Research Laboratory was established in 1995, and has investigated various materials such as ceramic, metal, plastics and diamond surfaces. Within months, research generated with hip and knee simulators can help determine what would take years to discover if tested with a patient.
Dr. Ian Clarke, who has been in the field of implant research for over 25 years, directs the laboratory. He obtained his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Stratholgde in Scotland and presents information on implant research extensively throughout the world. His expertise has brought the collaboration of scientists from all over the world including Sweden, Japan, Germany, France, England and the United States to form a "global village" of international research experts.
The laboratory is a leading center for testing among both the private and commercial communities. Further tests of experimental materials are currently in progress, and are promising exciting results. Several of these studies have been sponsored by the National Institute of Health. In addition, many implant companies have recognized the need for independent, non-biased testing and have chosen the Peterson Tribology Research Laboratory for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) testing because of their excellent research methods. Within a short time, the Peterson Tribology Research Laboratory established itself as a world leader in the research of hip and knee implants.
