Diabetes management
Diabetes can be managed successfully by eating well, exercising, and managing stress. Although diabetes cannot be cured, keep in mind the "M's" of control:- Monitor blood sugars
- Meal plan balance and timing
- Manage stress
- Move the body (activity and exercise)
- Medications when needed (including insulin)
It is important to observe the following guidelines:
- Maintain the prescribed diet as outlined by a physician and dietitian
- Maintain an exercise program
- Check blood sugar faithfully, especially when ill
- Check urine for ketones when blood sugar is 250 mg/dl or higher
- Always take the prescribed amount of medication, unless your physician instructs otherwise
- Seek medical care when ill or for treatment of any infection
