How Diabetes is Diagnosed
Diabetes is diagnosed by a fasting or random blood sugar test. Fasting refers to not eating for 10 to 14 hours in order to find out the blood sugar level in the absence of food. Random refers to a blood test at any time in the day after eating. A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate occasions confirms a diagnosis of diabetes.
