Winning with Diabetes
Winning with Diabetes is a series of three classes that provide comprehensive self-management diabetes education. The classes are designed for individuals who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, who have never had diabetes education, or who need a refresher course. Winning with Diabetes classes are taught by certified diabetes educators who are also registered nurses, registered dietitians, and physicians.

- Reactions to and coping with a diabetes diagnosis
- What is diabetes? How is it diagnosed?
- Types of diabetes/pathophysiology
- Signs and symptoms of diabetes
- Target blood glucose ranges
- Hyper/Hypoglycemia
- Diet - Introduction to meal-planning
Class 2
- Acute/chronic complications
- Cardiovascular risk assessment and prevention
- Usual diabetes labs with interpretation
- Foot care
- Exercise
- Diet assessment
- Introduction to low sodium, low fats, saturated, and unsaturated fats
- Label reading
Class 3
- Sick days
- Medications
- Screening for complications of eyes, feet, kidneys, and blood vessels
- Patient lab results with interpretation
- Hands-on meal-planning
- Patient self-management and goal-setting
- Diploma and free cookbook for each attendee of all three sessions
Program pre-requisites:
- Physician referral
- Insurance authorization for patients with HMO plans
- Copy of most recent lab results faxed to the Diabetes Treatment Center at (909) 558-3023 or sent with patient to the first appointment:
- HgbA1c
- Lipid panel
- Microalbuminuria, random or 24-hour
