LLUMC Emergency Medicine Residency: program FAQs

Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) by applicants

How are emergency department shift schedules organized?

By resident consensus, all shifts are 10 hours in length. Residents are scheduled for 200 to 220 clinical hours per month while on emergency medicine rotations. Chief residents prepare shift schedules. In most months, each resident receives two full weekends off duty per month.

Where are LLUMC residency graduates now practicing?

Numerous graduates since 1984 practice nationwide in urban, suburban, and rural settings. More than one fourth have entered academic emergency medicine, and many have become emergency department directors. Graduates of our program are not only outstanding clinicians but routinely become leaders in their department, hospital, and specialty.

Why is LLUMC emergency medicine residency a three-year program and not a four-year program?

LLUMC's program has always been highly successful in a three-year format and there are no plans for any change in this length of training. Graduates of PGY-123 programs who desire additional educational experience have ready access to numerous one- and two-year emergency medicine fellowships.

At what level do applicants with previous postgraduate training enter the program?

Applicants who have completed postgraduate training in another specialty are eligible for entry at the PGY-1 level only, and an accelerated program for those with such training is not available. Some alterations in the first year curriculum may be possible.

Does LLUMC sponsor visas for foreign medical graduates?

No, LLUMC does not sponsor visas for foreign medical graduates.

How many letters of recommendation are required prior to consideration for an interview?

Applicants should submit a minimum of three letters of recommendation through the ERAS system. At least one letter of recommendation should be from an emergency medicine physician.

Are there any factors that will delay an offer to interview?

Except in extremely rare circumstances, applicants must have completed the USMLE Step I exam prior to an interview being offered. In addition, applicants must have documentation of their performance in an emergency medicine setting. The preferred format is the standardized letter of recommendation (SLOR) (see http://www.cordem.org/ to download this template). If a SLOR is initially unavailable a transcript showing the grade achieved on an emergency medicine rotation, or other comparable documentation can suffice.

When are interviews typically offered?

Interviews will be offered to competitive candidates only after the completion of the ERAS application. Typically, offers to interview are sent shortly after the dean's letter has been received.

Are EM sub-internships available through LLUMC?

EM sub-internships are available for interested fourth-year medical students. Dr. Lynda Daniel-Underwood is responsible for coordinating medical student training during rotations through the LLU emergency department. Lyne Jones, her assistant, can help in the coordination of rotations. Ms. Jones can be reached by email at: ljones@ahs.llumc.edu.

Is flying mandatory?

During the EMS training ground ride alongs with EMS is mandatory but flying is not required.

Is there any other information I should know about LLUMC before deciding to apply?

If matched at LLUMC applicants will be subject to a criminal background check and urine drug testing prior to becoming eligible for clinical duties.
