Movement Disorders/Parkinson’s Disease

Movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, ataxia or dystonia are neurological diseases associated with changes in the brain cells. These changes either cause excessive involuntary movement or lead to a lack of purposeful movement.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive movement disorder that affects nerve cells (neurons) within the part of the brain that controls muscle movement. People with Parkinson’s disease and other diseases are disabled from producing and controlling bodily movement. Their lives are significantly impacted because they have trouble performing simple everyday tasks such as walking, talking, chewing and even sleeping.

The Department of Neurology applies an integrated, multidisciplinary team approach to treat and diagnose movement disorders. At Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), patients undergo comprehensive evaluation that allows our neurologists to make an accurate diagnosis. Specialists also collaborate with experts within other medical departments such as neurosurgery, to make sure every aspect of a patient’s disorder and treatment have been evaluated.

This rigorous approach to evaluating patients allows our specialists to develop unique treatment plans dedicated to relieving pain and managing symptoms so that each patient can preserve their quality of life.

The Department of Neurology offers diagnostic studies and evaluation procedures to accurately identify the treatment that bests suits your specific needs. Our procedures include:
