Department of Neurosurgery
Neurosurgery is a medical specialty involving the surgical repair and treatment of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves) as well as the spine, scalp and skull. Neurological disorders have the potential to be severely debilitating, and can often impact an individual’s quality of life. Because the brain and nervous system are so complex, identifying the best surgical solutions for patients is crucial to providing life-saving care.
At Loma Linda University Medical Center’s (LLUMC) Department of Neurosurgery, our experienced neurosurgeons collaborate with a variety of other medical and surgical specialists including otolaryngologists, interventional radiologists, neurologists, general surgeons, pain management specialists and physiatrists. Our expert team also includes physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nutritionists, case managers and social workers to address the full spectrum of problems that may affect our patients. These multidisciplinary teams use state-of-the-art technology and techniques to provide the optimal treatment for each individual patient.
The Department of Neurosurgery also ensures that patients receive appropriate guidance as they make decisions about their care. Extensive preoperative education, community seminars and hands-on interactive tools help patients regain their independence and demonstrate the Department’s commitment to healing individuals and not just surgically treating their medical condition.
The Department of Neurosurgery treats all forms of neurological conditions for children and adults. We specialize in:
- Spine
- Minimally invasive spinal surgery
- Brain and spinal tumors
- Brain and spine trauma
- Adult scoliosis
- Aneurysms, and vascular malformations (AVM) of the brain and spine
- Carpal tunnel syndrome/ulnar neuropathy
- Deep brain stimulation (DBS)
- Endoscopic skull base surgery
- Endovascular procedures
- Epilepsy surgery
- Spinal column stimulators and pain pump implantation
Our expert team of neurosurgeons offers consultation to thoroughly review patients’ medical histories and diagnostic data in order to carefully select patients for potential surgery.
Cranial Procedures
The most common procedures we perform related to the scalp, skull, and brain include:
- Craniotomy for resection of adult and pediatric tumors
- Craniotomy for treatment of vascular lesions (aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations)
- Electroencephalography (EEG)
- Endoscopic skull base surgery (example, transsphenoidal resection of pituitary tumors)
- Epilepsy surgery
- Ventriculoperitoneal shunts for hydrocephalus
Spine Procedures
We perform a wide range of minimally invasive and open spine procedures, including:
- Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACD&F)
- Cervical laminectomy with or without fusion
- Cervical and lumbar artificial disc replacement
- Lumbar laminectomy and discectomy
- Lumbar fusion, including anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF)
Peripheral Nerve Procedures
- Carpal tunnel release
- Peroneal nerve decompression
- Ulnar nerve decompression
Endovascular Procedures
- Carotid artery stenting for carotid stenosis
- Coiling of cerebral aneurysms
- Embolization of arteriovenous malformations
