Rehabilitation Institute

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, or physiatry, is a medical specialty that aims to restore the functional ability of individuals suffering from physical impairments caused by disease or injury. These impairments can not only impact mobility, but also affect an individual’s quality of life.

When a person is physically impaired by injury or disease they need the medical expertise of an experienced physiatrist and rehabilitation team to restore their mobility and see actual results. Physiatrists are nerve, muscle and bone experts who treat injuries and illnesses affecting movement. They apply their expertise to develop a comprehensive, rehabilitation treatment program for restoring optimal function without surgery.

As a critical component of care, an extensive range of rehabilitation therapy services and programs are offered in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Rehabilitation programs are specifically designed based on an individual’s type of injury or illness. Under the direction of a physiatrist, the Rehabilitation Services team, which is comprised of multiple specialists including physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists and speech/language pathologists support patients’ physical, social and emotional needs during the treatment process.

Together, the physiatrist and rehabilitation team treat the whole person, helping patients of all ages rebuild their lives and achieve independence and maximum mobility.
