Loma Linda University was the first pancreas program in the Inland Empire, and possibly in Southern California, to use the new technique of enteric (intestinal) exocrine pancreas drainage. Unlike the old technique of bladder pancreas drainage which has been associated with severe urologic complications, intestinal pancreas drainage is physiologic, allowing patients to avoid such complications as hematuria, dehydration, acidosis, urethral disruption, and frequent urinary tract infections experienced with bladder drainage.
