LLUMC Living Donor - Who can donate?

Who can donate?

Potential recipients and donors undergo three initial blood tests to decide if they are compatible. First, the donor's blood type is checked. This must be compatible with the recipient's blood type. Next, the donor's blood is mixed with the recipient's in a test called a "crossmatch" to determine if the recipient's body would react negatively to a kidney from the donor. The results of this test are used to decide if the recipients body

would accept a kidney from the donor. Finally, the donor and recipient's tissue typing are compared to examine how closely they are matched.

Once it has been determined that the possible donor and recipient are compatible, further testing will be started on the donor to make sure that the donor's health will permit donation and the risk to the donor is low. Remember, only you can make the final decision whether or not donating is the right decision for you.
