Residency Program
Applicant Information
The applicant may find the following information useful to plan the application process.
Qualifications
Our department has an excellent track record of graduating superior residents, and we make every effort to keep up the traditional high standards of our program by looking for applicants who display the following attributes and/or qualifications:
- Solid academic achievement as demonstrated by USMLE performance
- Strong clinical performance as demonstrated by letters of recommendation and the medical school dean's letter
- Adequate interpersonal/communication skills as demonstrated by the interview process
Applicants who have interesting and diverse backgrounds, including research experience, are encouraged to apply.
Positions Available
We have 45 residents in our program, 15 in each year. We will be offering 15 positions available for match in March of 2008.
The Process
Our program participates in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP). All applicants should apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
The cutoff date for application for the March 2008 match is Friday, November 2, 2007. Applications are evaluated by the program director and the associate program director, and those who are chosen for an interview will be contacted by the residency coordinator by e-mail to schedule the date for interview. The interviews will take place from November through January. Slots fill up rapidly so applicants are encouraged to complete their applications as soon as possible.
Approximately 10 applicants will be interviewed per day. The night before the interview applicants will be invited to dinner (courtesy of the department) at a local restaurant with the chief residents and other residents who are available. This will give ample opportunity for applicants to associate with our residents to ask questions about the program, and we encourage all applicants to take advantage of this time.
The day of the interview typically begins with a meeting with the program director or associate program director who will give a short presentation about the particulars of the program, including locations, hours, rotations, and so forth. A continental breakfast will be served. Applicants will interview with members of the selection committee, which is composed of the chair, vice-chair, program director, and associate program director. At times, other attendings will interview if any of the above are not available. All interviews are one-on-one and take about 10 to 15 minutes each. When the interviews are finished, applicants are shown around the premises by the chief residents and further opportunity is then given to interact with present residents, students, staff, and others.
Application Requirements
Each applicant will be required to submit through ERAS the following materials:
- Current copy of the curriculum vitae (CV)
- Two current letters of reference
- USMLE results
- Personal statement (one page is sufficient)
- Medical school transcripts
- Medical school dean's letter
