PurposeConsidering current literature and information provided by previous course attendees, this program is designed to update the anesthesiologist on recent advances in selected areas that are pertinent to contemporary anesthetic practice. Each participant will be provided with a syllabus that has been prepared by the speakers and will serve as an ongoing reference.
Program objectivesThis course will address changing concepts and recent advances in several areas of anesthesiology. Issues relevant to contemporary practice will be addressed including:
Regional Anesthesia topics will update the practitioner on the uses, types, techniques and effects of regional anesthesia. An optional workshop will be available.
Cardiac Anesthesia topics will update the practitioner on monitoring techniques, complications and techniques to improve organ function during the perioperative period.
Respiratory and airway topics will update the practitioner on management of patients with chronic pulmonary disease and management choices for airway management for patients with normal and difficult airway anatomy. An optional workshop will be available.
Neuroanesthesia topics will update the practitioner on management of patients with trauma of the CNS and spine, and management of patients with intracranial vascular pathology.
Perioperative Medicine topics will update the practitioner on mechanisms and approaches to coagulopathy; blood substitutes, the role of consultants in perioperative care, the impact of herbal substances on perioperative care, approaches to perioperative care that may allow faster recovery and the risk of awareness during anesthesia.
Case presentation conferences and directed panel discussions will allow the practitioner to assess the possible application of the topics presented to their individual practice settings.

The workshop includes lecture, computer assisted teaching with graphic illustrations, and hands-on experience with options available to use when routine methods fail. During the workshop the attendee will have individual exposure to various tools for managing patients with difficult airway anatomy including; fiberoptic intubation, retrograde intubation, laryngeal mask airway/intubating airway, combitubes, and others including techniques for pediatric patients. Registration will be limited.
Regional Anesthesiology - Monday, February 19, 2001, 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. Registration Fee $175

Goals for this workshop: The attendee will have the opportunity to improve regional anesthesia skills, with emphasis on:
- Patient selection and preparation
- Practical techniques
- Pitfalls in practice of regional areas
The workshop includes lecture, computer assisted teaching with graphic illustrations, and hands-on experience. During the workshop the attendee will have individual exposure to various models for regional anesthesia with an opportunity to learn applications of regional anesthesia for procedures involving upper and lower extremities, the thorax and the abdomen or pelvis. Registration will be limited.

Loma Linda University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
The Loma Linda University School of Medicine designates the Advances in Anesthetic Practice Symposium for 22.5 credit hours in Category I of the Physicians Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
The Pain Management Forum has been designated for 7 hours in Category I of the Physicians Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
The optional workshops are approved for 2.5 additional Category I CME credit each.
The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) has granted approval for up to 26 credits for core symposium, code 23242; expires 02/20/01. The Pain Forum has been approved for 7 CE credits, code 23243; expires 02/16/01.
