Advances in Anesthetic Practice
36th Annual Clinical Anesthesia Symposium
February 16 - 20, 2008
Statement of Purpose/Overall Objective
This program is designed to update anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists by addressing changing concepts on recent advances in several selected areas that are pertinent issues relevant to contemporary anesthetic practice, including:
- Regional Anesthesia - topics will update the practitioner on the uses, types, techniques and effects of regional anesthesia. An optional workshop will be available.
- Cardiac Anesthesia - topics will update the practitioner on monitoring techniques, complications and techniques to improve organ function during the perioperative period.
- Obstetrical Anesthesia - topics will identify the advantages and disadvantages of the newer labor analgesia techniques including the combined spinal-epidural technique and will identify problems in communication that may impact on patient safety.
- Perioperative Medicine - topics will update the practitioner on mechanisms and approaches to coagulopathy, blood substitutes, the role of consultants in perioperative care, the impact of herbal substances on periopertive care, approaches to perioperative care that may allow faster recovery, and the risk of awareness during anesthesia.
- Pediatric Anesthesia - topics will identify current anesthetic management strategies for the pediatric outpatient including the child with an upper respiratory tract infection, the child with sleep apnea, and what might be the youngest acceptable age for outpatient surgery.
Each participant will be provided with a syllabus that has been prepared by the speakers and will serve as an ongoing reference.
Cultural and linguistic issues will also be addressed in one or more of the above lectures as appropriate.

Coordinator: Michelle L. Schlunt, MD
3 Category I hours/3 AANA credits available.
This workshop is intended for the practitioner with some understanding of the basics of regional anesthesia and analgesia, and will provide the attendee with an understanding of:
- The applications of regional anesthesia to pain control in the perioperative period
- The anatomic considerations in regional anesthesia
- Demonstrations of the use of ultrasound for the administration of regional anesthesia
Additionally, hands-on experience identifying surface anatomy for several of the techniques presented will be available. Attendees who complete the workshop will receive a certificate indicating their completion of the course.
