Snake bite prevention for kids
How can I stop a rattlesnake from biting me?
- Snakes can strike about half their body's length. SO...STEP BACK JACK!If you step too close to a snake, take two giant steps backwards. That way the snake can't reach you.
- NEVER touch a rattlesnake, even if you think it's dead. Did you know that a dead rattlesnake could still hurt you? The fangs (teeth) can still inject venom--OUCH!
- Look before you leap! Don't reach or step into places where you can't see--rattlesnakes like to play "hide-and-seek."
- Protect yourself. Wear shoes and long pants when you are outside.
What do I do if a rattlesnake bites me?
- Tell an adult right away!
- Don't do anything to the place your were bitten. You might make it worse. YIKES!
- If you are bitten on the arm or hand, take off your rings, bracelets, or watch in case your arm swells up like a balloon.
