Recognizing and caring for the critically ill child is an important part of the practice of emergency medicine and is why a program specific to pediatric emergency medicine was established at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital. More than one third of all patients seen at the Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine are children. Loma Linda University Children's Hospital is a large referral center for the surrounding community and is also the region's only pediatric Level I trauma center. Residents thus receive exceptional training in both trauma and the resuscitation of critically ill children.
PEM residents are taught by board certified pediatric emergency medicine attendings and/or board certified emergency medicine attendings. The pediatric emergency division is a state-of-the-art, newly constructed facility that was completed in July 2002. Loma Linda University has the longest continuously running program in pediatric emergency medicine in California, accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), accepting residents each year since 1992. Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital is a 724-bed tertiary care center including a 232-bed children's hospital. Our Children's Hospital serves a county population of 2 million people, in an area of 20,100 square miles, approximately the size of the entire state of West Virginia. [Top]
We have experience training graduates from emergency medicine residencies and from pediatric residencies. The program duration is two years for emergency medicine residency graduates and three years for those who have trained in pediatrics.
Graduates from emergency medicine programs have the following required rotations:

Graduates from pediatric programs have the following required rotations:

Multiple electives are available during pediatric emergency medicine residency and include:
*Pediatric cardiology
*Pediatric neurology
*Pediatric dentistry
*Orthopaedics
*NICU
*PICU
*Toxicology
*Pediatric surgery
*Pediatric neurosurgery
*Anesthesia
It is also possible to participate as a member of our critical care transport team that typically carries over 700 critically ill children a year.
Abundant support is available for clinical research, with mandatory protected research time during the program.

*Residency library and shared office space near the Loma Linda University Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine with restricted card-key access is made available. This library contains an extensive collection of textbooks, current journals (i.e., Annals of Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Care, and Pediatric Emergency Medicine), an article filing cabinet, and four computers with Internet access. Residents are provided with personal e-mail addresses. A full-page scanner and slide-making software facilitate the creation of presentations. MEDLINE searching and POISINDEX features are available 24 hours in this library, as well as in the Medical Center emergency department itself.
We offer free unlimited access to the Drayson Center, an immense recreation complex on the LLU campus. This state-of-the-art facility was completed in 1995 and boasts:
*Extensive aerobics and weight-training equipment
*Three full-size indoor basketball courts
*Two running tracks--one indoor and one outdoor
*Five racquetball courts
*An indoor climbing wall
*Two large heated swimming pools, of which one has a 22-foot-high, 150-foot water slide
*Four softball fields
*Six lighted tennis courts
*Two lighted volleyball courts.
LLU also has an intramural sports program with softball, volleyball, football, soccer, and basketball. Classes and training are available for rock climbing, tennis, SCUBA, marathon race training, golf, aerobics, karate, and much more.
Eligibility for Residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital
Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital seeks qualified individuals who have demonstrated commitment to the mission of Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital.
All residents and fellows at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital must be able to support the mission of Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital "to continue the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, "to make man whole" in a setting of advancing medical science and to provide a stimulating clinical and research environment for the education of physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. Further, they must agree to be subject to the standards of conduct and ethics are consistent with the ethics, principles, and philosophy of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital will accept for consideration applications for residency or fellowship programs from qualified physicians who demonstrate commitment to the mission of Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital, and who meet one of the following criteria:
A. Graduates of medical schools accredited by the LCME;
B. Graduates of osteopathic schools accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA);
C. ECFMG certified graduates of other medical schools.
A California Medical License is required at the time a matched candidate begins the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship.
Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital will NOT accept for consideration the applications of individuals who have violated the rules of the National Resident Matching Program. Neither will it knowingly offer a position to individuals who have terminated a training agreement without a letter of release from the institution.

Our residency program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Interviews are by invitation only after review of a completed file. Interview schedules tend to fill quickly. Applicants are matched for our program through the NRMP matching process.

- Documentation Requirements for Residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children's Hospital
All applicants are required to provide all documentation listed below prior to the application being processed for consideration:
*A completed Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application.
*Current curriculum vitae. Please account for all time periods since graduation from medical school;
*Photocopy of medical school diploma (or evidence of anticipated graduation prior to appointment) from a medical school acceptable to the State of California and translation if not in English;
*Official medical school transcript(s), and translation if not in English;
*Evidence of having achieved a passing score on at least one of the following examinations:
(a) USMLE Step 1
(b) NBME Part 1
(c) FLEX Component 1 and 2
(d) COMLEX 1
* Recommendation letters from each of the following (through ERAS or ORIGINAL documents):
(a) Dean's letter from the medical school of graduation
(b) Program director for each prior training program
(c) Two reference letters from physicians currently acquainted with applicant
(d) Letter of good standing from licensing board of any state where applicant has been licensed
(e) A letter from the Medical Staff Office of any facility where staff privileges have been held
* All applicants must possess a valid work permit prior to the date the rank order list is submitted to the matching program or prior to a position being offered. This includes United States citizenship, permanent residency, eligibility for a J-1 visa sponsored by ECFMG, or an H1-B visa for study of medicine in an accredited United States medical school.
* All applicants must have successfully completed the appropriate training prescribed for beginning their specific residency or fellowship program by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
International Medical School Graduates are required to submit the following ADDITIONAL documentation:
*"Application Status Letter" from the Medical Board of California (MBC) dated within the past year, indicating acceptance of their medical education in meeting MBC requirements and eligibility to commence postgraduate training in California, should a position be offered.
* ECFMG Standard Certificate with valid date
* Scores for examinations used to qualify for the ECFMG Certificate.
House Staff Office, the Graduate Medical Education Committee, or the specific GME program may require additional documentation prior to acting on a completed application.
All completed applications must be processed and approved by the House Staff Office or GMEC PRIOR to any offer being made to an applicant. Official offers of acceptance are issued by the House Staff Office. [Top]
