Additional services provided by the department of security

Car problems

If you experience car trouble on campus, call the department of security. The department is available to assist you with such problems as:

  • vehicle jump starts
  • keys locked in the car
  • lost cars

Make sure to provide your location and make, model, year, color, and license plate of your vehicle. If possible, lift the hood and stand by your vehicle. Security personnel will respond and assist you as soon as possible.

Medical assistance

Emergency requests for medical treatment and ambulance services should be directed to the department of security, using the emergency 911 number. The department will provide basic response and will contact the appropriate Emergency Medical System (EMS) for you.

Escorts

Escort service is available during dark hours, 7 days a week for all members of the University community. If you need an escort, call the department of security and give your name, location, and destination. A security officer will be glad to meet you and walk or drive you to your car or other campus destination. Due to the officer's varying responsibilities a wait may be necessary before an officer arrives for your escort.

Locksmith services

The University engineering service's lock and key department provides locksmith services to offices and buildings owned by the University. Lock core changes and issuance of keys are maintained by the engineering service's lock and key department for the University. The department of security maintains key issuance for Loma Linda University Medical Center and the University engineering service's lock and key department maintains the locksmith services.

Lock repairs, door hardware problems, or any other repair services of locks and doors are provided by the University engineering service's lock and key department. Keys are only issued to authorized persons with proper identification after receiving a completed key request form.

Automobile accident reports

If you or someone you know is involved in an automobile accident on campus, call the department of security immediately. The department of security will take an accident report which may be used for insurance purposes. Please, do not contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department as they will not take an accident report on University property.

If there are injuries involved, the department of security will contact the appropriate rescue and Emergency Medical Support (EMS) agency. You can contact the department of security via any of the Campus Emergency Phones or on any campus phone located throughout campus. Indicate the parking lot you are in, whether there are any injuries, and the make and color of the vehicles involved.

Personal injury reports

If you or someone you know is ill or injured on University property, contact the department of security via any of the campus emergency phones or any campus phone. An officer will be dispatched and the appropriate emergency medical support (EMS) personnel for assistance, if needed.

Lost and found

The department of dispatch receives lost and found articles on the University campus and Loma Linda University Medical Center. If an item is lost on campus, you can contact the department of security by calling extension 44350 on any campus phone. To reclaim a lost item or turn in a found item please go to the dispatch department at Loma Linda University Medical Center room A338. Property will be kept for a period of 90-days and will be handled as follows:

When the owner of found property cannot be identified, it will be returned to the person who found it, if they have so requested. Exceptions: Employees of Loma Linda University or Loma Linda University Medical Center whose job functions include providing a clean, maintained, and safe environment are not able to claim found articles, even after the 90-day waiting period. Department of security and other employees that are entrusted with a higher level of accessibility to campus areas are prohibited from receiving unclaimed found articles. Unclaimed property will be donated to a local charity.

Life safety

Prevention: the most important part of life safety (fire safety). Most fires can be prevented if we will all follow guidelines, and use common sense when handling fire and flammables. On a diverse campus like ours, there are a number of areas which have potential fire hazards that require special attention, including laboratories, areas with oxygen-enriched atmospheres, and, frequently places being remodeled. Be aware of any hazardous materials in your area, and keep heat, fuel, and oxygen--the three requirements for a fire--separate. Special care is needed where Bunsen burners are used. They should be burning only when needed and never left unattended. Keep combustible materials away from the flame. To help prevent fires, as well as for health reasons, smoking is prohibited throughout the University campus.

"RACE": the University's fire plan
Rescue - Alarm - Contain - Extinguish

If you find a fire:

  • Rescue all people from the room (be prepared to assist the elderly, children, and anyone with disabilities), and close the door.
  • Turn in the alarm. Pull the alarm nearest to the fire. (Note that some buildings don't have pull alarms.) Also, dial 911, and give the Security Control Center the exact location, nature, and extent of the fire.
  • Contain the fire. Close the rest of the doors to the immediate area.
  • Extinguish the fire if you can do so safely. Use the proper extinguisher.
  • Evacuate the building. Don't use elevators. Be aware of your school/building's relocation point. Account for everyone, and stay out of the way of emergency vehicles.
  • Note that in the Medical Center or Community Medical Center, evacuation is not implemented until told to do so by the person in charge of the unit/department, or the ranking fire official on the scene.

If you hear the fire alarm: Begin evacuating the area. Follow instructions, and assist others as needed.
